National Pest Management Association Offers Homeowners Tips to Prevent Termite Damage this Spring
March 5 (Fairfax, VA) — As the spring months are welcomed across the country, homeowners should be attentive to the increased potential of termite infestations. This problem can not only affect the structural dependability of one’s home but can also create significant losses as termites can chew through flooring, carpeting and wallpaper as well as wood. In fact, termite infestations cause homeowners $5 billion in property damage every year.
“Although social insects, termites are excellent at concealing their presence,” said Cindy Mannes, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “This ability to remain undetected is why these pests pose such a risk to homeowners. So often, termites are only discovered once severe property damage is visible. Spring is a perfect time to both inspect your property for these hard to detect pests and take proactive steps to try to prevent infestations.”
NPMA experts offer these tips to help homeowners prevent termite infestations:
- Termites love moisture. Avoid any moisture at the foundation of your home.
- Divert water away from your property through properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks.
- Remove old form boards and grade stakes, which may have been left behind after a home was constructed.
- Termites may create mud tubes to enter a home. Routinely inspect the foundation of your home for signs of mud tubes.
- Keep firewood away from direct contact with your home.
“Termites are not discriminating; they will infest any home that offers them a proper food source,” advises Mannes. “Even the most well-kept homes are at risk.
